HHS ranked in top high schools in nation - again! Posted on June 12th, 2009

Heritage High School has been notified that once again they are ranked in Newsweek magazine’s list of top 1500 public high schools in the nation. This makes the FIFTH year in a row that HHS has received this honor. Rankings are determined by taking the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and / or Cambridge tests taken by all students at the school and dividing it by the number of graduating seniors.  To see the entire list, go to http://www.newsweek.com/id/201160 . On Saturday, June 13, HHS graduated 204 seniors in the Ralph D. Spencer Memorial Fieldhouse. Best of luck to the Class of 2009!

Art students and teacher exhibit at local gallery Posted on June 4th, 2009

Jon Roark, HHS art teacher, and several of his students currently have their work exhibited at Light Wings Gallery on Belmont Street. The exhibit, which will be open through June, is also on the First Fridays tour, June 5, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Outdoor Track Team
The boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams each placed second in the Seminole District meet. Senior Latavia LaPrade was selected as Female Athlete of the Year. Coach Theo McIvor was named Girls’ Coach of the Year.
The girls’ track team placed fourth at the Regional track meet on Saturday, May 23 at Broadway High School. The boys’ track team placed sixth at the Regional track meet.

2009-cvcc-tech-fair-07412009 CVCC Technology Fair Award Winners
HHS students received several awards at the CVCC Technology Fair held Friday, May 15. In the Trebuchet competition the team of Trevor Darrah, Mike Wilkes, Michael Clements, Brice Bhalla, Brandon Briscoe won 1st place in distance. In the Bridge competition there was a tie between Gloria Bang and Marlisha Stewart for 1st place in Bridge Strength vs. Weight. Marlisha’ Stewart’s bridge held 52 lbs before breaking. Gloria Bang’s bridge broke a CVCC record for holding 81 lbs - the most weight in the history of the competition. Judges ran out of testing weight twice and at 81 lbs gave up trying to break the bridge. Additional awards in Bridge Strenght vs. Weight were awarded to Emmanuel Padilla (2nd place) and Joshua Knight (3rd place). In Design, honorable mention awards went to Chris Anderson, Joseph Link, Joshua Knight, and Daniel Cyrus. In Architectural Model, honorable mention for design went to Ashley Cottrell and Vincent Monroe. Second place in the team competition went to Joshua Knight, Sam Carroll, Ashley Horne, David Honse, and Joseph Link.

BOMM Named Virginia Honor Band for the 7th Time
The Heritage High School Band has been named a Commonwealth of Virginia Honor Band for the 2008-2009 school year by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association. This award recognizes Superior achievement in all areas of the band program. In order to be considered for the award, the band must have received a Superior rating at the two events sponsored by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. These events are the State Marching Band festival held in October and the District VI Concert Band Festival held in March. The band received not only a Superior rating at both festivals, but high accolades from all of the judges and audiences for their outstanding performances.

 

This is the seventh time the Heritage High School Band has been recognized with this award and the third time in the past four years. “I am very proud of the efforts of all of the students, parents and community supporters. This is a team award that brings much recognition to our school and school district from the band community”, says Director of Bands Mike Hand. “Simply stated, it recognizes the Heritage High School Band program as one of the best in the state.”

HHS Pioneer Rifles to Compete at Junior Olympics
The Heritage High School JROTC Marine Air Rifle Team will be competing at the 2009 Junior Olympics this summer. The team will  represent the Commonwealth of Virginia this July at Camp Perry, Ohio. Team members are Thomas Aguons, Alexander Bradstreet, Chester Brockwell, III, and Ashley Farmer.
This honor falls on the heels of a 2nd place finish in the State Army Junior ROTC 3-Position Air Rifle Tournament. Click here to see a slide show of these students.

Students Place at State History Day Competition
Congratulations to both Heritage groups that particpated in the State History Day competition in Williamsburg on Saturday, April 24. Maria Michael, Eleni Phelps, and Sarah Stephens placed 3rd in the group documentary category. Stefan Moscalu and Tyler Terry’s website entry won 2nd place qualifying them to compete at Nationals in June in College Park, Maryland. Good job to both groups.

Track Results
The girls’ track team placed 2nd at the Joe Curcio Invitational at Lynchburg College on Saturday, May 2. The boys’ team placed third.
